THE PRELUDE

BOOK THE FIRST.

I. THE CHILD ALONE.

Behold me then, a little Child, Not yet four years old upon earth; When I first lived in the sweet air, And first saw sun and moon and stars! ... These were my early thoughts, and they Were natural to me: for I was A Soul before reason's dawn betrayed, By Nature guided to those themes— To simple flowers, and to water, And to the winds that blow by night, And to the silent watches of the stars, With infinite affections bound. ... For I had communications from another world— The spirit of God was within me; And there did I exist—my life Was fed with beauty—my eye was filled With light—and all around was joy.

II. THE BOY AMONG MEN.

But soon my Heaven began to change— My soul grew darker day by day; For Knowledge came—and Wisdom—came, With faces grave, and solemn eyes, And words that echoed through my mind With solemn music, and deep tone. ... They taught me how the Heavens go, And the progressive annual round; They showed me Earth, and her domain, How she revolves on her own axis, And in her motion rounds the Sun; They traced the Solar Pathway bright, Through regions infinite and vast, And pointed out the twinkling worlds, That fill the Milky Way so broad.
