Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
Yesterday, the Japanese Government has launched a surprise offensive against Pearl Harbor, the military base of the United States Pacific Fleet. This attack was deliberate and premeditated.
Since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam Island in the Marianas near Wake Island, and the Philippines; and today, the Japanese have invaded Malaya and bombed Singapore.
Last night, Japanese planes came over Hong Kong.
This morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.
All these actions were taken contrary to treaties, contrary to international law, contrary to moral law, and contrary to that which is right. And thus do we know that only complete victory can drive our enemies from the land and give security to people in whose behalf we are ready to die.
I call upon every man and woman in this Nation who can bear arms to serve as a soldier or sailor, airman or Marine, under officers and a government of their own choosing. With such sacrifice no other road to happiness lies open for us.
In accordance with the Constitution I have directed that all executive departments shall aid and support the Armed Forces, and shall assist in carrying into effect a program of national defense.
May God help us all, and may God bless the United States of America.
