Nor did I suppress or deplete their fruits; I didn't have any magic to make them ripen early or produce abundantly. Other planters, however, did not follow this approach. They would plant the trees with roots curled up and replace the soil frequently. When they cultivated the trees, they either overdid it or didn't do enough. If someone tried to do the opposite, they might overly pamper the trees, worrying about them too much. They would inspect them in the morning and caress them at night, looking back after leaving and even scratching the bark to check if the trees were alive or dead, shaking the trunks to observe how dense the leaves were.
